Altos de Chavon
leisure and cultural center of Casa de Campo.
Altos de Chavon was conceived as leisure and cultural center of the luxurious Casa de Campo, so that is packed with restaurants, bars and shops. As for shopping, there are clothing, jewelry (where you can buy the famous larimar), art galleries, snuff, Dominican handmade crafts…
Probably the most charismatic construction of Altos de Chavon is its impressive amphitheater. It was opened in 1982 by Frank Sinatra, and since then have gone through it the major artists of international renown as Sting, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Julio Iglesias, Duran Duran… is the main stage for shows and events in the country, and especially for residents in the luxurious resort of Casa de Campo. It is built of coral stone, in the style of a Greek amphitheater. Its size is impressive, has a capacity for 5,000 spectators.
Altos de Chavon is a recreation of an Italian sixteenth-century village built in the late 70s as a cultural and entertainment center of Casa de Campo. It’s a real delight to walk through cobbled streets, surrounded by small houses occupied by upscale restaurants, shops, cafes, art galleries … Its architecture is very peculiar, the whole town is hand-built in coral stone, and It gives you the feeling of being immersed in a fairy tale.
It was designed by the Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro and built by Italian Roberto Coppa. Here are some scenes from the movie “Apocalypse Now” were filmed.
