In the Cotubanamá National Park is home to the island Saona, being one of the most studied of the national parks in Dominican Republic. This beautiful place not only has a great beauty, but also has great archaeological wealth and crystalline waters that highlight its uniqueness.
The National Park is located in the extreme southeast of the country, between the provinces of La Romana and La Altagracia, and its territory is a peninsula of trapezoidal shape, the large base is represented by an imaginary line connecting the towns of Boca de Yuma and Bayahibe, with a length of 25 km, and its base the lower South coast and it has about 11 kms.
Deputy Minister of Environment, Manuel Serrano, reveals that the Cotubanamá National Park annually welcomes about 600,000 visitors, being Saona island its main tourist destination. Indica que the island receives about 2,000 visits a day, and that 80% is foreign and 20% are Dominicans. “We have to visit more our park, I think that there are more Dominicans who go to Miami and even to Europe, than who come to this national park. Saona island can be visited without any dollars, without having to be unpleasant immigration checks, without risks”, said the Vice Minister.
The trade of handicrafts in Mano Juan and Punta Catuano female population has integrated into the labor market, existing local or sale distributed huts community, said Manuel Serrano.
The aim of the Minister of Environment is to make these families can continue to flourish, so there is a project for which they handle recycling and thus this represents income for them.
